Existential Threats

ai def

Existential threats refer to dangers that can threaten our existence. They can be both physical and symbolic. The most serious threats to the physical world are climate change, inequality, and aging. Situations such as terrorism and nuclear warfare pose symbolic threats. There is no single, definitive definition of the three kinds of existential threats. Although the threats are varied, we must consider them all when assessing our present. This article will focus on a few and show how we can prepare ourselves to deal with them.

Physical

A great example is the COVID-19 epidemic. Extreme weather conditions could become the norm due to rising temperatures. This could result in severe weather conditions, including water and food shortages. Although climate change will not pose an existential threat to humanity, it increases the possibility of wars, natural catastrophes, and pandemics. This article will highlight some of the current threats to humanity.

Symbolic

Symbolic existential risks can be multidimensional and have a distinct effect on people in different settings. People's attitudes towards conservative policies may be negatively affected by the threat of racial discrimination or a decrease in White population. These studies are valuable, but the relevancy of collective symbolic threats is dependent on the culture and context of the group. It is true that racial discrimination, status-based hatred and racial prejudice are more prevalent in whites than elsewhere.

Inequality

Therborn believes that inequality is a killer. Deprivation in essentials of life can lead to psychosomatic effects, and psychological effects of different classes have an immediate impact on one's physical health. This author refers to a study that looked at the relationship between life expectancy in the United Kingdom, and the civil service grades. Therborn also discusses research that shows certain diseases are related to social status.

Climate change

President Joe Biden declared climate change a serious threat and announced sweeping new policies to combat it. New laws include increasing wind power generation, and home cooling systems that are efficient. They also allocate funds for climate-affected areas. A Republican senator, however, objected to a wider bill to reduce rising temperatures. And while the possibility of mass extinction cannot be completely ruled out, many scientists are concerned that current policies are not going far enough to prevent this looming disaster.

Artificial intelligence

Though superintelligent intelligence is often considered a serious threat, it is not always so. AI systems can be a threat to future value, technology maturity, and capital. However, the real existential threats posed by AI systems to Southern populations are not as neatly conceived. Instead, they require us to confront global capital dynamics and asymmetries between the North and the South.

FAQ

Is Alexa an Artificial Intelligence?

Yes. But not quite yet.

Alexa is a cloud-based voice service developed by Amazon. It allows users speak to interact with other devices.

The Echo smart speaker, which first featured Alexa technology, was released. However, since then, other companies have used similar technologies to create their own versions of Alexa.

These include Google Home, Apple Siri and Microsoft Cortana.

Which industries use AI more?

Automotive is one of the first to adopt AI. BMW AG uses AI as a diagnostic tool for car problems; Ford Motor Company uses AI when developing self-driving cars; General Motors uses AI with its autonomous vehicle fleet.

Other AI industries include banking, insurance, healthcare, retail, manufacturing, telecommunications, transportation, and utilities.

How will AI affect your job?

AI will eventually eliminate certain jobs. This includes drivers of trucks, taxi drivers, cashiers and fast food workers.

AI will create new jobs. This includes business analysts, project managers as well product designers and marketing specialists.

AI will make your current job easier. This includes positions such as accountants and lawyers.

AI will improve the efficiency of existing jobs. This includes customer support representatives, salespeople, call center agents, as well as customers.

What is the latest AI invention

Deep Learning is the latest AI invention. Deep learning is an artificial intelligence technique that uses neural networks (a type of machine learning) to perform tasks such as image recognition, speech recognition, language translation, and natural language processing. It was invented by Google in 2012.

Google recently used deep learning to create an algorithm that can write its code. This was done with "Google Brain", a neural system that was trained using massive amounts of data taken from YouTube videos.

This allowed the system to learn how to write programs for itself.

IBM announced in 2015 the creation of a computer program which could create music. Neural networks are also used in music creation. These networks are also known as NN-FM (neural networks to music).

Statistics

  • That's as many of us that have been in that AI space would say, it's about 70 or 80 percent of the work. (finra.org)
  • More than 70 percent of users claim they book trips on their phones, review travel tips, and research local landmarks and restaurants. (builtin.com)
  • While all of it is still what seems like a far way off, the future of this technology presents a Catch-22, able to solve the world's problems and likely to power all the A.I. systems on earth, but also incredibly dangerous in the wrong hands. (forbes.com)
  • In the first half of 2017, the company discovered and banned 300,000 terrorist-linked accounts, 95 percent of which were found by non-human, artificially intelligent machines. (builtin.com)
  • In 2019, AI adoption among large companies increased by 47% compared to 2018, according to the latest Artificial IntelligenceIndex report. (marsner.com)
